Costa Rica’s Pacific coast is world-famous for billfish, and the waters off Uvita and the Osa Peninsula are no exception: sailfish, marlin, mahi-mahi and tuna, with jungle-covered mountains as your backdrop.
Wildlife you can see
What you can catch
Depending on the season and conditions, the main targets are:
- Sailfish and marlin offshore,
- Mahi-mahi (dorado) and yellowfin tuna,
- Roosterfish and snapper closer to the coast.
Catch and release
In Costa Rica, sailfish and marlin are catch-and-release. Captains use circle hooks and release billfish quickly. Other species such as mahi-mahi or tuna can sometimes be kept — ask your captain on the day.

When to go
Fishing is possible year round. The dry season (December to April) usually brings the calmest seas. Every season has its own highlights — tell us your dates and we will tell you what is biting.
Tips
